History of the Pennsylvania State CYO Basketball Tournaments - The Pennsylvania State Basketball Tournament began with a gathering of the original State Board of Athletic Directors on August 23, 1972. At the time, the Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware was included. The met to discuss the possibility of a state wide tournament for the High School CYO program. It was determined at that meeting that the CYO tournament would be limited to the dioceses within the State of Pennsylvania. Later in that school year, a 6 team tournament was held (Altoona-Johnstown and Scranton did not have high school programs at the time, Scranton would not participate on the high school level until 1985 and Altoona Johnstown currently does not have a program). St. Margaret from Pittsburgh won that first tournament. In response to the growing popularity of girls’ basketball in the 1970s, a Girls Grade School State CYO Tournament was begun in 1976 with St. Cyril’s from the Pittsburgh Diocese winning. The Boys Grade School State CYO Basketball Tournament took a different route through history. That division did not come under jurisdiction of CYO until 1978, making it the newer of all the tournaments, but a “State Grammar School Tournament” was held at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania. The Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity sponsored the tournament from 1950, with the final year being 1977. The State Board of Athletic Directors brought the Boys Grade School Tournament under their auspices for the 1978 season.
